Lake Tekapo Winter Elopement
A peaceful, ground-level winter elopement at Lake Tekapo — snow-capped mountains, crisp alpine air and the turquoise lake.
A peaceful winter elopement
Lake Tekapo in winter is something rare — snow-covered mountains, crisp alpine air, breathtaking lake views and the quiet beauty of New Zealand’s winter landscape. This package is for couples who want that peaceful winter elopement without a helicopter flight.
Every winter wedding is planned individually around the weather and snow conditions on the day, and your ceremony location is chosen to give you the best possible experience and photography. It’s a relaxed, intimate day with personal planning, professional photography and everything you need for a beautifully organised New Zealand winter elopement.
What your day looks like
- Your day begins calmly at your Lake Tekapo accommodation.
- We travel to a ceremony spot chosen on the day for the best snow, light and weather.
- You exchange your vows quietly, with the snow-capped mountains and turquoise lake all around you.
- Photography continues through the winter landscape, at a relaxed, unhurried pace.
Embracing a New Zealand winter adventure
A winter wedding in Lake Tekapo is perfect for couples who love adventure and understand that nature is part of the experience. Snow-covered landscapes, crisp alpine air and the quiet beauty of winter create an unforgettable setting, but they also mean being flexible if the weather has other plans.
For winter weddings, I recommend arriving in Lake Tekapo around two days before your wedding day. This gives you time to settle in, enjoy the region and provides flexibility should winter weather affect your journey into the Mackenzie Basin.
During winter, snow and icy conditions can sometimes affect the roads leading into Lake Tekapo. If this happens, your wedding day may simply unfold a little differently. Your ceremony time may be adjusted, and your wedding team may need additional travel time to reach Lake Tekapo safely. Hair and makeup artists, photographers and other suppliers may also require extra travel time if winter driving conditions become challenging. By allowing a little flexibility, everyone can travel safely while still creating a beautiful and memorable wedding day.
With nearly 30 years of experience planning weddings throughout New Zealand’s South Island, I monitor the weather and road conditions closely, keep you informed and adapt your plans when needed. My priority is always your safety while creating the best possible experience. For couples who embrace the adventure, a winter wedding in Lake Tekapo is one of New Zealand’s most magical experiences.
