Drive times can be longer than they look – plan generously.

Driving Tips for International Couples
New Zealand’s roads are beautiful, but they can also be very different from what you’re used to – especially if you normally drive on the right-hand side of the road.
Driving on the Left
In New Zealand, all driving is on the left-hand side of the road. This can take a little time to adjust to if you’re used to driving on the right. Take it slowly for the first hour, avoid long travel on your arrival day, and always look both ways carefully when turning.
Rural & Alpine Roads
Many South Island roads are narrow, winding, and have no barriers. Take your time, especially around lakes and alpine passes. The scenery is stunning – pull over safely if you want to enjoy the view.
Bridges & One-Lane Roads
Some rural and alpine routes include one-lane bridges. Always slow down and follow the give-way signs.
Weather Changes Quickly
Conditions can shift fast – especially in Tekapo, Mt Cook, Queenstown and Wanaka. In winter, request snow chains with your rental car and avoid driving in icy conditions unless you’re confident.
Don’t Rush Your Travel Days
Drive times in New Zealand often take longer than they look on a map. Plan extra time, avoid driving tired, and allow plenty of breaks. If you’ve just flown long-haul, it’s safest to stay local the first night before driving long distances.
Keep to the Speed Limits
NZ speed limits are strict, and rural roads can be deceptive. Stick to the limit, especially on corners. Your wedding day will feel much more relaxed when you travel safely.
Check Road Conditions Before You Travel
New Zealand’s highways and alpine routes can close or slow down due to weather, ice, slips, or road works. Before you travel – especially in winter or if you’re heading to Tekapo, Mt Cook, Queenstown, or Wanaka – check the official New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) updates so you know exactly what to expect.
