FAQs for Overseas Couples

Can we legally marry in New Zealand if we live overseas?

Yes – absolutely. You don’t need to live in New Zealand to get legally married here.
You’ll just need to apply for a New Zealand marriage licence, which takes three working days to process.

You can read more about the New Zealand marriage applications and procedures here

How far in advance should we book our elopement?

Most overseas couples book 6–18 months ahead, but many also book last-minute.
If your licence is processed and you’re ready to go, I can have a full elopement organised and confirmed within 24 hours of your go-ahead.

Do we need to bring witnesses with us?

No – you don’t have to bring anyone.
If it’s just the two of you, I can provide your two witnesses at no extra cost.

What happens if the weather isn’t suitable on the day?

Weather is part of New Zealand’s charm.
If it’s unsafe to fly or the conditions aren’t right, I’ll organise a safe and beautiful backup location or adjust timing with your pilot and photographer.
We always have a backup plan.

Can we bring family or friends with us?

Yes, absolutely. Many couples bring a few guests.
You can have up to 6 people including the couple for my intimate elopements.

Do we need a New Zealand celebrant?

Yes – all legal weddings here must be conducted by an NZ-registered celebrant.
I’ll arrange your celebrant for you as part of your package, so you don’t need to worry about this.

How do payments work for overseas couples?

Payments are made by secure international bank transfer.
Most of my overseas couples now use Wise.com, as their fees are much lower and the transfer arrives quickly.

You’ll receive a contract with everything clearly outlined – your deposit amount, the final balance, and the exact date the final payment is due. It’s all very straightforward.

Do we need any special visas to get married in New Zealand?

Most couples can marry here while visiting on a standard visitor visa or under visa-waiver entry.
Your marriage licence and ceremony are completely separate from immigration.

I don’t handle visas or immigration advice, so if you’re unsure about your entry requirements, it’s best to check directly with New Zealand Immigration before you travel.

Can you help with locations and travel planning?

Yes – absolutely.
Once you’re booked in and your contract is signed, I’ll guide you through the best locations for the season, help with travel timing, and make sure everything fits comfortably around your arrival and departure.

Will our marriage be recognised back home?

Yes – New Zealand marriages are recognised in all countries around the world.
The only extra step some countries ask for is proof that your New Zealand marriage certificate is genuine.

This is done through either:

Both are handled through New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs, and it’s a simple process.

After your wedding,  I will personally apply for the appropriate paper work needed from Internal Affairs to be attached to your marriage certificate. This will be couriered to you directly from the Government Department.
