Heli Weddings Explained

A heli wedding is one of the most breathtaking and intimate ways to marry in New Zealand – perfect for small elopements of up to six people.
With a private flight, stunning alpine views, complete privacy, and a peaceful ceremony high above the world, these weddings feel magical from start to finish.

With nearly 30 years of experience planning New Zealand elopements, I guide you through every step – from landing permissions and safety, to weather planning, group flights, and the full legal process – so your heli wedding feels effortless, safe, and beautifully organised.

What Is a Heli Wedding?

A heli wedding combines a scenic helicopter flight with a private ceremony in one of New Zealand’s most spectacular mountain or lakeside locations.
You fly from the heli base with your celebrant, photographer, and (if needed) witnesses, and land in a peaceful, private setting away from tourists.

Heli weddings are:

  • Safe

  • Suitable for all ages and fitness levels

  • Perfect for privacy

  • Ideal for incredible photography

  • Beautiful in every season

At NZDW we specialise exclusively in intimate elopements of up to six people (including the couple).
This keeps your day relaxed, private, and perfectly suited to helicopter access.

Helicopters also operate on strict weight and seating limits, so group arrangements are planned carefully.
Most flights take the couple, the celebrant, and the photographer together. Guests may require a second helicopter depending on the number of people, final weights, and whether videography is included.

How a Heli Wedding Works (Step-by-Step)

Step 1 - Planning Your Day`

You choose the landing location you love, and I organise all the arrangements with the helicopter team.
If weather conditions mean your chosen landing isn’t safe on the day, your pilot will take us to an alternative location with spectacular views but more shelter – still stunning, still private, and always safe.

Step 2 - Getting Ready

Hair and makeup (optional) are completed at your accommodation.
Your photographer may also capture a few preparation images before you head to the heli base. (You will have a driver to take you and return you to your accommodation after your wedding day is completed.)

Step 3 - Arriving at the Heli Base & Safety Briefing

You’ll meet your pilot, who will talk you through the safety of heli flights and the landing plan for your wedding. You’ll also have a quick weigh-in so the crew can confirm seating and weight arrangements. It’s a relaxed, calm start with a few photos before boarding.

Step 4 - Scenic Flight to Your Location

Enjoy a private helicopter flight with spectacular views

Step 5 - Your Ceremony

Your celebrant leads a beautiful, intimate ceremony with breathtaking views.

Step 6 - Photography Time

After your ceremony, your photographer captures natural, scenic images – relaxed, unhurried, and full of emotion.

Step 7 - Return Flight (or Optional Second Landing)

Fly back to the base, or choose a second landing for even more stunning photography.

Safety, Permits & Legal Requirements

DOC Concessions & Access Permissions

Not all heli wedding locations sit on DOC land – some are on private land, and others are accessed under the helicopter company’s approved landing areas.

New Zealand Dream Weddings ensures every location is fully approved and legal, whether it requires:

  • a DOC Concession

  • helicopter operator landing approval

  • or permission to land on private land

Your ceremony is always conducted safely, responsibly, and in the correct permitted areas.

Questions You Can Ask Any Planner

It’s always okay to ask:

  • “Is this landing location permitted?”

  • “Does this spot require a DOC Concession or private land permission?”

  • “Are you approved to operate at this location?”

These friendly questions help ensure your day is safe, legal, and properly protected.

Safety Certification & Insurance

We only work with certified helicopter operators who meet New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority standards.
NZDW also holds full public liability insurance for your peace of mind.

Weather & Backup Planning

Weather can change quickly in alpine environments, and your pilot always makes the final decision about flying. Most days are flyable – but if the weather makes your original landing unsafe, here is exactly what happens:

Alternative Landing Options

If cloud or wind affects your chosen location, the pilot will take us to a nearby alternative with more shelter.
These backup areas are still stunning, private, and fully approved –  most couples simply fly to a different mountain spot and enjoy equally beautiful views.

If We Cannot Fly At All

If weather makes all flying unsafe, your wedding will still go ahead on the ground at a beautiful lakeside or mountain-view location.
Your celebrant and photographer continue with your day, so nothing is postponed or cancelled.

Full Refund of the Helicopter Cost

If the helicopter cannot fly, the heli portion of your package is refunded to your nominated bank account within 24 hours, less if any fee for the on ground location.
There are no penalties or extra fees – it’s a simple and fair adjustment.

About Holding Alternative Days

To avoid couples paying for additional crew days, we do not reserve a second date.
However, if the weather is unsafe but looks much better the following day – and if the helicopter, celebrant, photographer and crew are all available – I will always personally try to arrange a switch of days for you.

This is not guaranteed, as it depends fully on availability, but if everyone is free, I am more than happy to make this change for you

Choosing Your Landing Location

New Zealand offers some of the world’s most beautiful heli wedding locations – dramatic alpine peaks, snowy landings, glacier backdrops, rocky ridgelines, and peaceful lakes.

Popular options include:

DOC Concession Assurance:
All NZDW heli landings and scenic locations are fully approved and permitted by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC), and we also have permission for all private land ceremonies.

Photography & Videography

Heli weddings offer incredible photography opportunities – sweeping landscapes, natural light, movement, and total privacy.

Your photographer captures:

  • emotional moments

  • scenic portraits

  • candid interactions

  • celebration images

  • detail shots

Everything is taken at a calm, relaxed pace so you can enjoy every moment.

What to Wear & Bring

Alpine weather can be sometimes cool, so I suggest:

  • Shoes with good grip, no high heels due to uneven ground

  • A jacket or wrap

  • Sunglasses (optional)

Who Heli Weddings Are Perfect For

Heli weddings are ideal for couples who want:

  • privacy

  • adventure

  • unforgettable scenery

  • a relaxed, intimate ceremony

  • incredible photography

  • a once-in-a-lifetime experience

No fitness level is required – landings involve only short, easy walking.
