Mountain and Helicopter Weddings

Many couples who contact me about helicopter weddings in New Zealand already know they want something extraordinary – a wedding above the lakes, peaks and alpine ridgelines of the South Island that feels both breathtaking and deeply personal. When you choose New Zealand Dream Weddings for your heli wedding, you’re working with a fully planned elopement service built on nearly 30 years of specialist experience creating carefully coordinated alpine weddings across Queenstown, Wānaka, Aoraki / Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo.

I personally plan and coordinate heli weddings throughout these regions, including remote mountain ceremony sites, glacier and alpine landings, and carefully chosen ground-based alternatives when needed. This means I organise the practical steps for you from the very beginning – including location permissions, DOC-approved access where required, helicopter coordination, trusted celebrants, photographers, flowers, hair and makeup, and the timing and flow of your day as a whole.

Many couples first get in touch with me from overseas when they are still deciding which alpine location is right for them or how helicopter weddings in New Zealand are planned safely and realistically. You are never expected to navigate that on your own. I guide you through each stage of planning so your heli wedding comes together in a way that feels calm, well supported and true to what first drew you here.

Whether you’re dreaming of a dramatic Queenstown mountaintop landing, a quiet Wānaka alpine ceremony, or an unforgettable Aoraki / Mt Cook glacier wedding, I help you choose the right location and package, then bring everything together so you can simply arrive, take in the landscape and focus completely on each other.

Say your vows above it all – on a snow-capped peak, glacier edge, or peaceful alpine ridge – reached by private helicopter.
Elope by helicopter to Queenstown, Wanaka, Mt Cook or Lake Tekapo, with fully approved heli-wedding services on private and conservation land, planned by New Zealand Dream Weddings (NZDW) – New Zealand’s trusted elopement specialist.

Whether you dream of a dramatic alpine landing or a serene mountain ridge overlooking turquoise lakes, I’ll help you choose the setting that feels right for you. Every flight and ceremony is planned with care, ensuring your heli-wedding experience is as seamless and personal as it is spectacular.

For couples marrying beside Lake Tekapo or among the Lupins, helicopter photo-shoots are a beautiful add-on,  capturing unforgettable images high above the Southern Alps after your lakeside ceremony.

DOC Concession Assurance

All New Zealand Dream Weddings (NZDW) heli landings and scenic wedding locations are fully approved and permitted by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) – the government branch responsible for protecting New Zealand’s national parks and conservation lands.
NZDW also secures permission for all private-land ceremonies, ensuring every location is both legal and environmentally responsible.

Best Time for Helicopter Weddings

Helicopter weddings in New Zealand are stunning year-round, but the best conditions are typically October – May.

  • November – April: Most reliable weather and clear skies

  • May and September: Crisp alpine light and snow-dusted peaks

  • June: Not recommended due to unpredictable winter weather and limited flying windows

  • July – August: Possible for some locations but always weather-dependent

Your chosen date, time, and landing location are carefully planned around safety, weather, and comfort – so you can simply relax and enjoy the experience.

Heli-Wedding Services

New Zealand Dream Weddings offers complete heli-wedding and elopement services, including your celebrant, photographer, helicopter flight, and all local coordination.
I also personally assist couples with lodging their marriage licence through New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs – Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM), ensuring everything is completed correctly and legally before your wedding day.
You simply arrive – everything else is taken care of for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Planned by New Zealand’s Trusted Heli-Wedding Specialist

Do we need a helicopter for the ceremony itself? Not always. Some couples choose a full helicopter wedding ceremony on the mountain, while others marry at ground level in places like Queenstown, Wānaka, Lake Tekapo or Aoraki / Mt Cook and book a heli flight afterwards for mountaintop photos. I help you compare both options so you can decide whether a full heli ceremony or a heli photo-flight add‑on fits your day best.

Can we legally marry on the mountain?
Yes. All New Zealand Dream Weddings heli‑wedding ceremony sites are planned through approved DOC or private‑land permissions, depending on the location. I arrange the paperwork, coordinate with local helicopter operators and ensure your marriage licence, celebrant and witnesses are all in place so your helicopter wedding is fully legal and recognised in New Zealand.

What if the weather changes?
Helicopter flights are weather‑dependent, so wind, cloud and visibility are always checked carefully before flying. I work closely with the pilot to review conditions  I’ll guide you through options on the day so your wedding stays relaxed and stress-free.

How long do we spend at the mountain landing location?
Landing time varies by region and package, but most Queenstown, Wānaka and Mt Cook heli weddings allow around 45–60 minutes on the mountain for your ceremony, photos and a quiet moment together in the alpine setting. I help structure this time so you’re never rushed, while still working safely within aviation rules and flight schedules.

Can guests come with us to a helicopter ceremony?Yes, guests can often travel on the helicopter with you for the ceremony, but aircraft seating and weight limits mean many heli weddings with guests require more than one helicopter. I check capacity and weight information with the operator at the planning stage so you know exactly how many guests can fly, how many helicopters are needed and what the overall costs will be before you confirm anything.

How far in advance should we book a helicopter wedding?
Helicopter weddings are among the most limited wedding options in New Zealand because they depend on aircraft availability, seasonal weather windows and landing permissions. I recommend getting in touch as early as you comfortably can so I can check availability across Queenstown, Wānaka, Aoraki / Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo for your preferred time of year and hold suitable options while you finalise your plans.

Do we need alpine experience to have a helicopter wedding?
No alpine experience is needed. Heli‑wedding ceremony locations are chosen so they are safe suitable for couples and guests. Once your location is confirmed, I brief you on footwear, warm layers and timing so stepping out at the landing feels exciting but still comfortable and safe on the day
