Lake Tekapo is one of the most breathtaking places in New Zealand to elope, with its vivid turquoise lake, snow-dusted mountain views, and soft alpine light that makes every photo feel peaceful and timeless.
In late spring and early summer, the lupins bloom in soft shades of pink, purple, and blue – creating one of New Zealand’s most iconic wildflower backdrops. The best time to marry among the lupins is usually from mid-November to the end of December, depending on the season.
Whether you picture a simple lakefront ceremony or an intimate elopement surrounded by flowers, I’ll help you choose the perfect location and plan a day that’s relaxed, meaningful, and completely yours.

Church of the Good Shepherd - What Couples Should Know
Please note: Weddings inside the Church of the Good Shepherd are managed directly by the church and must be booked through the parish office. All ceremonies within the church are Christian services conducted by an approved minister, and wedding planners cannot arrange bookings on behalf of couples.
These have been the rules of the church for many years, and all bookings or permissions are handled solely by the parish.
While the church itself is closed to outside celebrants, couples may take photos outside the building with prior permission – or choose one of our fully permitted lakefront or lupin-field locations nearby. These settings offer the same breathtaking views without the restrictions and are all DOC-approved for legal elopements.
DOC Concession Assurance - Lake Tekapo
All NZDW lakefront and scenic wedding locations around Lake Tekapo are fully approved and permitted under our official Department of Conservation (DOC) concession.
New Zealand Dream Weddings operates only at authorised DOC sites and private locations with pre-approved access, ensuring your Tekapo ceremony is legal, safe, and environmentally responsible.
You’ll also receive full guidance for your New Zealand Marriage Licence, so every detail is taken care of.
