Queenstown’s Secret Above the Lake
Imagine lifting off from Queenstown, the lake glittering beneath you, as the helicopter carries you higher and higher. In just minutes, the town disappears, replaced by sheer alpine cliffs, golden tussock, and a silence that feels ancient. When you step onto The Ledge, it’s as if the mountain itself is holding you. Lake Wakatipu spreads wide and endless below, the Remarkables rise sharply across the water, and the alpine breeze carries every word of your vows out into the sky.
Here, there are no cars. No crowds. Just you, your love, and the wide embrace of the Southern Alps.
What It Feels Like to Say “I Do” Here
The Ledge is raw, rugged, and breathtakingly simple. You’ll stand on a rocky outcrop with nothing but the lake below and the horizon stretching forever. In summer, the air is sharp and clear, the breeze fresh off the mountains. In autumn, the hills glow gold and the sunsets linger. In winter, snow dusts the peaks and every laugh feels like it echoes through the valley. In spring, wild alpine flowers peek out between the rocks, a soft reminder of life returning.
It’s a place that makes your promises feel etched into the land itself.
Where Is The Ledge?
The Ledge sits on Cecil Peak, just across the lake from Queenstown. Accessible only by helicopter, it’s a short 10 minute flight that carries you from the bustle of town into pure alpine stillness.
Best Time Of Year For A Cecil Peak Elopement
- Spring (Sep–Nov): Crisp air, alpine flowers, bright fresh light.
- Summer (Dec–Feb): Warm breezes, golden tussock, vibrant lake colours.
- Autumn (Mar–May): Dramatic sunsets, rich earthy tones, perfect evening glow.
- Winter (July–Aug): Snow-dusted peaks, clear skies, soft stillness.
Seasonal Note: We don’t offer helicopter weddings or elopements in June, as alpine weather during this month is too unpredictable for safe flights and reliable mountain access. If you’re dreaming of snow, July onwards delivers stunning winter conditions. Spring, summer, and autumn all offer beautiful alternatives for your Queenstown mountaintop celebration.
A Little History
Cecil Peak (known in Māori as Te Tapu o Tane, sacred to Tane) has long stood as a sentinel beside Lake Wakatipu. Its craggy cliffs and rock faces have seen centuries of travellers and stories. Early European settlers named it after the son of a notable local figure, but for centuries before, local iwi treasured its wildness and connection to the lake’s legend of the sleeping giant.
What Your Day Looks Like
Your photos will look like something out of a dream:
- You, standing together on a rocky ledge, the whole of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu stretched beneath you.
- The golden light catching your hair as the wind plays around you.
- A kiss that feels like it belongs to the mountains themselves.
- And laughter that carries far into the valley below.
