Weather & Seasons for Eloping

Understanding New Zealand’s Weather for Your Elopement

New Zealand is beautiful in every season, but weather conditions can change quickly – especially in alpine and lakeside regions.
With nearly 30 years of experience planning elopements across Queenstown, Wanaka, Tekapo, and Aoraki / Mt Cook, I help couples choose the best season, timing, and location so their day is safe, relaxed, and unforgettable.

Seasons at a Glance

Summer (December – February)

Best for: All weddings – heli and ground
Notes:
Summer brings long daylight hours, warm temperatures, and beautifully clear lake and mountain views.
Mornings are usually calm for flying, with bright, vibrant colours throughout the day.

Autumn (March - May)

Best for: calm days, golden colours, stable weather, crisp air.
Notes:

  • One of the most reliable seasons in New Zealand.

  • Beautiful soft light for photography.

  • Excellent for heli weddings.

Winter (June - August)

Best for: snow-capped mountains, dramatic alpine scenery, cool clear light.
Notes:

  • June is not recommended for heli weddings due to limited flying windows.

  • July and August can offer stunning snow but require flexibility and pilot approval.

NZDW does not offer heli weddings in June
Weather patterns are too unstable, and aviation safety must always come first.

Spring (September - November)

Best for: fresh colours, snow still on peaks, soft new growth.
Notes:

  • September is ideal for snow weddings.

  • October – November may be windy but stunning for lakeside and meadow locations.

  • Tekapo lupins begin mid-November.

Seasonal Highlights Across New Zealand

Here’s how the seasons look in New Zealand’s most popular elopement regions.

Lake Tekapo – Lupin Season (Mid-Nov to Mid-Dec)

Tekapo’s lupin bloom is one of the most colourful and sought-after times for elopements.
These flowers appear for only a few weeks each year.

Best time: mid-November to mid-December
Notes:

  • Occasionally blooms continue into early January.

  • No helicopter needed — all lupin areas are accessible on the ground.

Autumn Colours - Wanaka, Queenstown & Tekapo (April–May)

April and early May have some of the best wedding light of the year.
Warm golden colours, calm weather, and glowing landscapes make this a favourite season.

Perfect for:

  • Wanaka, Mt Cook  & Queenstown heli landings

  • Queenstown, Wanaka  and Tekapo ground ceremonies

Winter Snow – July & August

Winter is stunning for couples wanting true alpine snow.
While June isn’t recommended, late July and August often provide stable cold air and good visibility.

All winter flights require pilot approval based on safety conditions.

Aoraki / Mt Cook (Seasonal Information)

Aoraki / Mt Cook is one of New Zealand’s most dramatic alpine regions.
Because weather can change rapidly, choosing the right season is essential for safety and the best experience.

Best Months for Mt Cook Weddings

NZDW recommends elopements in Mt Cook from:

✔ September to the end of May

These months offer:

  • clearer flying windows

  • more stable alpine weather

  • longer daylight

  • safe and reliable landing conditions

  • excellent visibility for photography

This is the ideal season for heli weddings and outdoor ceremonies in the region.

See our Aoraki / Mt Cook page for more details.

All alpine locations operate under New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) safety rules.

Winter Months (June–August)

❌ June

NZDW does not take June heli-wedding bookings.
June has very limited flying windows, strong winds, and unpredictable alpine patterns.

July & August

Beautiful snow is often present, but alpine can shift quickly.
Winter weddings are considered case-by-case, depending on aviation safety and pilot approval.

Mt Cook Helicopter Operations

NZDW works with experienced helicopter teams based at Glentanner, who operate year-round.
All Mt Cook wedding locations – including alpine landings, glacier areas, and snow landings – depend on:

  • wind levels

  • visibility

  • snowpack

  • aviation safety

  • pilot approval

Safety always guides the final decision.

Best Time of Day

All Day

✔ Weddings can happen at any time of day

With NZDW, your day is always planned with clarity and safety:

  • If winds change, your pilot may choose a more sheltered landing with beautiful views.

  • If flying isn’t possible, your ceremony moves to a safe, stunning ground location.

  • Your helicopter portion is refunded within 24 hours if no flight takes place.

  • If the next day looks perfect, I try to move your wedding – but only if
    ✔ the helicopter is available
    ✔ the pilot approves
✔ the celebrant, photographer, and videographer (if booked) are free

You are kept informed throughout – no guessing, no surprises.
