Queenstown Elopements – Why Couples from Around the World Choose This Iconic Destination

Elope in Queenstown – The Heart of New Zealand’s Most Breathtaking Weddings

For decades, couples from all over the world have travelled to Queenstown to marry among its snow-capped peaks and glittering alpine lakes.
There’s something about this small mountain town that draws people in, the stillness, the grandeur, and the feeling that you’re standing on top of the world.
Every Queenstown elopement here feels effortless, adventurous, and completely unforgettable.

If you’ve ever dreamed of eloping in Queenstown NZ, this guide will help you picture the magic of this alpine paradise.

When Is the Best Time to Elope in Queenstown?

Queenstown changes beautifully with every season, and each one offers something special for your wedding photos.

Summer (December – February) – Long daylight hours, warm temperatures, and bright alpine colours. Perfect for heli landings and lake-edge ceremonies.

Autumn (March – May) – Crisp air and golden tones across Arrowtown, Lake Hayes, and the high ridges.

Winter (July – August) – Snow on the mountains, clear blue skies, and that quiet, cinematic beauty Queenstown is known for.

Spring (September – November) – Fresh greens, melting snow, and wildflowers returning to the valleys.

Note: June is the one month we don’t book weddings in Queenstown.
The weather can be unpredictable, especially rain and wind, and helicopter flights are often affected.
We prefer to plan around this to give every couple a reliable, stress-free experience.

Why Couples Choose to Elope Here

Queenstown offers something rare: complete freedom.
You can exchange vows on a mountain peak, by a lake, or beside a glacier, then celebrate with champagne and photos that look straight out of a movie.

With nearly 30 years of planning experience, I take care of everything, from Department of Conservation (DOC) permits, trusted helicopter partners, and celebrants, to makeup, flowers, and photography.
You can simply arrive, breathe in the view, and enjoy every moment of your Queenstown heli elopement adventure.

How to Make It Legal

It’s wonderfully straightforward for both NZ and international couples.
You’ll need to apply for a marriage licence through Births, Deaths & Marriages New Zealand.
Once approved, your celebrant will have everything ready for signing on the day.

FAQs

How much does a Queenstown elopement cost?
It depends on your chosen location and helicopter time. Packages start around NZD $7000 (full details on the Queenstown Package page).

Do we need a helicopter?
Many couples do, it’s the best way to reach incredible, private mountaintop settings, but there are also beautiful ground-based options.

What if the weather changes?
We always have a backup plan and work with experienced pilots and vendors to adapt. Safety and enjoyment come first.

All NZDW heli and scenic locations are fully approved and permitted through DOC, private landowners, or local authorities. Each site is confirmed in advance, ensuring every couple’s wedding is both legal and breathtaking.
