Alta Tarns is a spectacular series of pristine alpine lakes high on Mt Alta above Wānaka. Surrounded by the Buchanan Mountains, this remarkable location is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking panoramic views across the Matukituki Valley, the Southern Alps and Tititea / Mount Aspiring. Accessible only by helicopter, it offers an unforgettable setting for an intimate alpine wedding.
I arrange your helicopter flight, assist with your New Zealand marriage licence application, organise your witnesses and photography, and make sure your day runs smoothly.
What your day looks like
Your day begins at your accommodation, where you’ll enjoy a relaxed morning getting ready for your wedding.
Your hairstylist and makeup artist will come to you, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy the excitement of the day. Before you get dressed, your photographer will arrive to capture the details of your wedding, including your dress, flowers, jewellery and those quiet moments before your ceremony.
Once you’re ready, you’ll travel to the helicopter base, where your pilot will welcome you before taking you on a scenic helicopter flight to Alta Tarns.
After landing beside the crystal-clear alpine tarns, you’ll have time to take in the breathtaking mountain scenery before exchanging your vows in complete privacy. Following your ceremony, you’ll enjoy a relaxed photography session together while exploring this spectacular alpine location.
After your time on the mountain, you’ll return by helicopter before continuing your celebrations however you choose.
From beginning to end, your wedding day is carefully planned so you can simply relax, enjoy the experience, and focus on celebrating your marriage together.

What are the Alta Tarns?
A pair of small, mirror-still alpine lakes high in the Southern Alps near Wānaka, reached only by helicopter — beautifully secluded and quiet.
How long is the experience?
About three hours in total — roughly an hour and a half of flying across the day, with a full hour at the tarns for your ceremony and photographs.
Is a helicopter wedding safe?
Yes. I work only with CAA-certified operators and hugely experienced alpine pilots, and every flight carries full insurance. The pilot always has the final say on the day — if conditions aren’t right to fly safely, we simply move to a beautiful alternative rather than take any risk. Your safety comes first, always.
