Heart & Truth
What Nearly 30 Years in This Industry Has Taught Me
Nearly 30 years in the wedding industry has taught me that experience is not about trends – it is about perspective, preparation, and quiet steadiness. This reflection shares what longevity really means behind the scenes.
When you have worked in the same industry for a long time, you begin to see patterns.
Not trends – patterns.
I began planning weddings in 1999. The industry looked very different then. There were no styled elopement packages, no social media expectations, no curated Pinterest boards. Couples came to me because they wanted something genuine and personal, not something designed for photographs.
Over the years, I have watched this industry grow, change, evolve – and sometimes become louder than it needs to be.
And here is what experience gives you.
It gives you perspective.
It teaches you what actually matters, and what does not. It teaches you that a perfectly styled detail will never matter more than how a couple felt when they stood together and said their vows.
It teaches you that logistics are not glamorous – but they are everything. Permits, weather plans, timing, legal processes, contingency options. These are not visible in photographs, but they are what make a day safe and seamless.
It teaches you that calm is not accidental. It is prepared.
Nearly three decades of planning has meant working through changing regulations, new helicopter operators, evolving DOC requirements, legal updates, venue shifts, and unexpected situations that no one ever sees behind the scenes.
Experience is not about how many weddings you have done.
It is about how many variables you have quietly navigated.
It is knowing that if the wind shifts, you already have a second location in mind.
If weather closes in, you already know the safest alternative.
If a timeline moves, you understand how to rebalance it without stress reaching the couple.
Longevity also teaches humility.
You learn that trends come and go. What lasts is trust.
Couples are not looking for spectacle. They are looking for someone who understands the land, understands the legal process, understands the rhythm of a wedding day in New Zealand – and can guide them without drama.
Nearly 30 years later, I do not feel the need to be louder.
I feel the responsibility to be steady.
And that, more than anything, is what experience has given me.
