Church of the Good Shepherd Wedding

The Church of the Good Shepherd is located on the shores of Lake Tekapo in New Zealand’s South Island and remains an active Christian place of worship within the Mackenzie Parish. Weddings held here are Christian ceremonies conducted by ordained clergy and approved through the Church Office. Once church requirements are met and the ceremony is confirmed, New Zealand Dream Weddings coordinates the planning and flow of the wedding day, followed by relaxed photography around Lake Tekapo township.

Set on the quiet shores of Lake Tekapo, the Church of the Good Shepherd is one of New Zealand’s most recognisable and cherished wedding locations. Built from local stone and framed by the vast Mackenzie Basin, the small alpine chapel looks directly across the lake to the surrounding mountains, creating a setting that feels both peaceful and timeless.

For many couples travelling to New Zealand, standing inside this historic church becomes one of the most memorable moments of their journey together. As you exchange your vows within the intimate stone and timber interior, the large window in front of the altar frames the lake and mountains beyond – a view that has made this little church famous around the world.

After the ceremony, the shoreline of Lake Tekapo provides a beautiful setting for relaxed photographs together. The surrounding alpine landscape, turquoise water, and wide open skies create a sense of calm and space that perfectly reflects the simplicity and meaning of an intimate wedding.

As you stand at the altar to exchange your vows, the window directly in front of you looks out across the turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo, with the surrounding mountains quietly framing the distance beyond. In that moment, the small stone church feels almost suspended within the landscape, creating a peaceful and surreal atmosphere where the beauty of the Mackenzie Basin becomes part of your ceremony itself.

The simplicity of the church, combined with the vast open scenery outside, creates an intimate setting that feels both timeless and deeply personal. It is a place where many couples from all over the world find that everything else falls away, leaving just the two of you, your vows, and the remarkable landscape surrounding Lake Tekapo.

After the ceremony, stepping outside onto the lakeshore offers another quiet moment together, with the turquoise lake, alpine air, and wide open skies providing a beautiful setting for photographs and reflection on the beginning of your marriage.

Donna-Louise Dohi, founder of New Zealand Dream Weddings, has been planning intimate weddings at the Church of the Good Shepherd since the early 2000s. Over the years she has guided many couples through ceremonies in this remarkable alpine chapel, helping them experience the quiet beauty and simplicity that make this location so special.

A Meaningful Christian Church Wedding in Lake Tekapo

Built in 1935, the Church of the Good Shepherd was created as a place of Christian worship, prayer, and reflection. Its simple stone architecture, lakeside setting, and mountain backdrop create a ceremony atmosphere that feels grounded, reverent, and deeply personal.

This wedding option is best suited to couples who value the spiritual significance of a church ceremony and prefer a calm, intimate experience rather than a large or highly produced event.

Christian Worship & Ceremony Context

The Church of the Good Shepherd is an active Christian church, not a commercial wedding venue. Regular worship services are held, and the church continues to serve its local parish and wider Christian community.

All weddings at the church are Christian ceremonies and must be officiated by ordained Christian clergy, subject to approval by the church minister and church availability. New Zealand Dream Weddings works respectfully within these pastoral and church guidelines when coordinating your wedding day.

Church Booking Requirements

All weddings held at the Church of the Good Shepherd must be booked directly through the Church Office.

Before a wedding can be confirmed, couples are required to meet the church’s requirements, which may include pastoral guidance and approval by the minister. Once the church booking has been approved and confirmed, New Zealand Dream Weddings can then coordinate the remaining elements of your wedding day.

We’ll guide you on when to contact the Church Office and what to expect, so this step feels simple and unhurried.

This package is designed for intimate weddings. A maximum of six people in total, including the couple, can attend.

Is this a Christian ceremony?

Yes. Weddings at the Church of the Good Shepherd are Christian ceremonies and must be officiated by ordained Christian clergy, subject to approval by the church minister.

Do we need to book the church ourselves?

Yes. All weddings must be booked directly through the Church Office once church requirements are met. NZDW then coordinates the remaining elements of your wedding day. NZDW can assist with guidance once church requirements are met.

Can we take photos inside the church?

Yes. For your wedding, NZDW’s experienced photographer has permission to photograph your ceremony inside the church, in accordance with church guidelines and respectful use of the space.

Will the church be private during our wedding?

Yes. During your confirmed ceremony time, the gates to the church grounds are closed and public access is restricted. Outside of your ceremony time, the church grounds are open to visitors.

Where should we stay for our Lake Tekapo wedding?

For a calm and stress-free wedding experience, all couples are required to stay in the Lake Tekapo area for their wedding. It is strongly recommended to book accommodation in Lake Tekapo for the night before the wedding, allowing time to settle in and avoid unnecessary travel on the day.
